Wat Chaiwatthanaram
A riverside wat on the west bank of the Chao Phraya, just outside Ayutthaya island, built by King Prasat Thong in the 17th century. Its tall central prang, ringed by smaller towers in the Khmer manner, is one of the best known sights of the old capital, especially at sunset.
-
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
The royal wat that stood within the grounds of the old palace of Ayutthaya, the holiest in the kingdom. Its three bell-shaped chedis, standing in a row, have become the picture most people carry of the ancient capital.

Wat Na Phra Men
A wat across the old moat from the royal palace of Ayutthaya, which came through the fall of the city in 1767 largely intact. Its hall holds a large crowned Buddha in royal dress, and some say it stands where an early Ayutthaya king was cremated.
-
Wat Phra Ram
A ruined wat in the heart of old Ayutthaya, east of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, built on the cremation site of King Ramathibodi I, the city's founder. Like the other great wats of the capital it faces east, and its tall prang is reflected in the pond beside it.
-
Wat Ratchaburana
A ruined wat in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, just north of Wat Mahathat, whose main prang is one of the finest in the city. A crypt deep inside the prang, where gold treasures were found, can still be entered.
-
Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
A wat on the edge of old Ayutthaya with the tallest chedi in the city. Rows of seated Buddha images draped in saffron cloth surround it, and a large reclining Buddha lies in the grounds.
