The best known in Switzerland
-
Abbey Library of St. Gallen
One of the oldest monastic libraries in the world, kept in the abbey district of St. Gallen. Its baroque hall is lined with carved wooden shelves and holds medieval manuscripts that go back to the early days of the Carolingian monastery.
-
Abbey of Saint Gall
The monastery that grew on the spot where the Irish monk Gall built his hermitage, founded by Saint Othmar in 719. For centuries one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe, its baroque cathedral and abbey district are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
-
Aletsch Glacier
The largest glacier in the Alps, about 23 kilometres long, formed where four smaller glaciers meet at Konkordiaplatz, where the ice is up to 905 metres thick. It is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, seen best from the ridges above Fiesch and Riederalp.
-
Glarus Thrust
A great fault in the eastern Swiss Alps where older rock was pushed more than 100 kilometres north over younger layers. The line between them shows clearly as a stripe across the cliffs of the Tschingelhörner, part of the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona World Heritage Site.
-
Jungfraujoch
A glacier saddle at 3,463 metres between the Jungfrau and the Mönch, sitting on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier. A railway tunnels up through the Eiger to reach it, ending at the highest railway station in Europe.
-
La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle
Two neighbouring towns in the Jura mountains laid out in neat parallel streets for the watchmaking trade, with workshops and homes built to catch the daylight. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and La Chaux-de-Fonds is where Le Corbusier was born.
-
Lavaux
Some 830 hectares of terraced vineyards climbing the south-facing slopes above Lake Geneva for about 30 kilometres between Lausanne and Montreux. Stone walls hold up the terraces, and wine villages sit among the vines of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
-
Monte San Giorgio
A wooded mountain of the Lugano Prealps above Lake Lugano, close to the Italian border. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its fossils of ancient marine life, some of which are shown in the small museum at Meride.
-
Old City of Bern
The medieval heart of Bern, built on a narrow hill wrapped on three sides by the Aare. Its layout has barely changed since the 12th to 15th centuries, much of it was rebuilt in sandstone after 1405, and long arcades run beneath the houses.
-
Zytglogge
A medieval tower built in the early 13th century that has been a guard tower, a prison and the city's clock tower. Its astronomical clock and mechanical figures perform just before the hour strikes, a show that draws a crowd in the old town.
-
Broken Chair
A wooden chair 12 metres high with one of its legs snapped off, standing on Place des Nations opposite the Palace of Nations. It was designed by the Swiss artist Daniel Berset, built by the carpenter Louis Genève and weighs 5.5 tonnes.
-
CERN
The largest particle physics laboratory in the world, set up in 1954 at Meyrin on the edge of Geneva, right on the French border. The World Wide Web was invented here, and its Science Gateway and the wooden Globe of Science and Innovation are open to visitors.
