Aletsch Glacier
The largest glacier in the Alps, about 23 kilometres long, formed where four smaller glaciers meet at Konkordiaplatz, where the ice is up to 905 metres thick. It is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, seen best from the ridges above Fiesch and Riederalp.

Grande Dixence Dam
A concrete wall 285 metres high at the head of the Val d'Hérémence, the tallest gravity dam in the world and the tallest dam in Europe. It holds back the Lac des Dix, whose water feeds four power stations of the Cleuson-Dixence scheme.

Matterhorn
A near-symmetrical pyramid of rock on the Swiss and Italian border, rising to 4,478 metres above Zermatt. Often called the mountain of mountains, it has become the emblem of the Alps and is said to be the most photographed peak in the world.

Sphinx Observatory
An astronomical observatory perched on a rocky summit at 3,571 metres, one of the highest in the world. A lift bored through the mountain carries visitors up from the Jungfraujoch station to its terrace, which looks straight down the Aletsch Glacier.

Gornergrat
A rocky ridge above Zermatt overlooking the Gorner Glacier, with the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa in full view. It is reached by a rack railway from the village, the highest open-air railway in Europe, and the Kulm Hotel at the top has observatories in its towers.

Great St Bernard Hospice
A hospice and hostel for travellers on the Great St Bernard Pass, named after its founder Bernard of Menthon and kept by a community of canons regular ever since. It is the home of the St Bernard dogs, bred here to help find travellers lost in the snow.

Klein Matterhorn
A peak of the Breithorn massif above Zermatt, at 3,883 metres the highest place in Europe that can be reached by cable car. Its viewing platform looks over the Breithorn Plateau glacier toward Italy, and the Matterhorn rises close by.

Rhone Glacier
The source of the river Rhône, at the far eastern end of the Valais and reached by the Furka Pass road. It can be visited only in summer, from the solstice to the equinox, when an ice grotto is cut into its flank.

Valère Basilica
A fortified church on a hill above Sion, facing the ruined Château de Tourbillon on the opposite hilltop. Inside is one of the oldest playable organs in the world, and the whole site is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
