Glarus Thrust

-
Bernina Pass
A high pass in the Bernina Range linking St. Moritz and the Engadin with the Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo. The Bernina railway crosses it in the open, running past the pale waters of Lago Bianco, a few kilometres east of Piz Bernina.
-
Caumasee
A forest lake near Flims sitting on the deposits of the great Flims rockslide. It is fed from underground springs, which give its water a clear turquoise colour, and in summer it is a favourite place to swim.
-
Diavolezza
A col and ski area at 2,958 metres above the Val Bernina, between Munt Pers and Piz Trovat. A cable car climbs to it from the Bernina road, and the terrace looks straight across at the glaciers of Piz Palü and the Bernina massif.
-
Landwasser Viaduct
A curved limestone railway viaduct of six arches spanning the Landwasser river between Schmitten and Filisur, opened in 1902 on the Albula line. Trains run straight off it into a tunnel cut in the cliff face, a view familiar from countless posters.
-
Morteratsch Glacier
The largest glacier by area in the Bernina Range, flowing down toward the valley near Pontresina. A footpath from Morteratsch station leads up to its snout, with markers along the way showing where the ice reached in years gone by.
-
Muottas Muragl
A shoulder on the southern slopes of the Blais da Muottas, reached by funicular from Punt Muragl. It looks down the length of the Upper Engadin over Samedan, St. Moritz and Pontresina and its chain of lakes.
-
Oberalp Pass
A high mountain pass linking Andermatt in Uri with Disentis in Graubünden, crossed by a road and the Glacier Express railway. Near the top lies the small Oberalpsee, close to the source of the Rhine.
-
Ruinaulta
The Rhine Gorge, a canyon of pale cliffs cut by the Anterior Rhine between Ilanz and Reichenau. It was carved through the debris of the prehistoric Flims rockslide, which once blocked the river, and a railway and rafts follow the water through it.
-
Swiss National Park
Founded in 1914, the oldest national park in the Alps and in Central Europe, set in the Engadin between Zernez, S-chanf, Scuol and the Fuorn Pass. Its forests and high valleys are left entirely to nature, and red deer, chamois and ibex roam its marked trails.
