A 1,128 metre mountain rising straight out of Lake Lucerne, with a large resort built on its ridge since the late 19th century, some 600 metres above the water. A cliff path leads to the Hammetschwand lift, an outdoor elevator fixed to the rock face.
Swiss Museum of Transport 6.2 km
Switzerland's most popular museum, opened in 1959 on the shore of Lake Lucerne. Its halls hold trains, cars, ships and aircraft along with communication technology, and a large collection of work by the local artist Hans Erni.
Rigi 7.7 km
A mountain massif almost surrounded by water, rising between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz. Its highest point, the Kulm, stands at 1,797 metres with a hotel dating from 1816, reached by cog railways from Vitznau and Arth-Goldau.
Chapel Bridge 7.9 km
A covered wooden footbridge crossing the Reuss on a diagonal, named after the nearby St Peter's Chapel. Painted panels from the 17th century hang under its roof, and with its stone water tower it is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe and the symbol of Lucerne.

A dying lion carved into a sandstone cliff, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and cut in 1820 and 1821. It honours the Swiss Guards killed at the Tuileries Palace in Paris in 1792, and Mark Twain called it the most mournful piece of stone in the world.
Spreuer Bridge 8.4 km
The second of Lucerne's covered wooden footbridges, crossing the Reuss downstream of the Chapel Bridge. Its roof beams carry a series of paintings of the Dance of Death, and it is quieter than its more famous neighbour.

A 1,898 metre mountain above Stans in the canton of Nidwalden. The way up is by a historic funicular followed by a cable car with an open upper deck, and the summit looks over Lake Lucerne and a long line of Alpine peaks.
