Badlands National Park
Nearly 100,000 hectares of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and gullies in southwestern South Dakota, banded in shades of grey, tan and red. Around them lies the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States, and the South Unit is managed together with the Oglala Lakota.
-
Crazy Horse Memorial
A mountain carving still in progress in the Black Hills, which will show the Oglala Lakota leader on horseback, pointing to his tribal land. It was commissioned by the Lakota elder Henry Standing Bear and begun by the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, and the finished face already looks out over the hills.
-
Mount Rushmore
Four 18 metre tall heads of US presidents carved into granite in the Black Hills: Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln. The sculptor Gutzon Borglum led the work from 1927 to 1941, helped by his son Lincoln.
