Hollywood Sign
Nine white letters, each almost 14 metres tall, on the slope of Mount Lee above Los Angeles. Put up in 1923 as an advertisement for a housing estate called Hollywoodland, it lost its last four letters in 1949 and was rebuilt in steel in 1978.
