Near Sukhothai Historical Park
Wat Sa Si 0.3 km
A small ruined wat in old Sukhothai set on an island in a pond, reached by a footbridge across the water. Its bell-shaped chedi in the Sri Lankan style rises behind a seated Buddha, and the ruins reflect in the still water at dusk.
Wat Mahathat 0.5 km
The chief wat of old Sukhothai, at the centre of the walled city, its main chedi topped by a lotus-bud spire. Rows of brick columns, standing and seated Buddhas and dozens of smaller chedis surround it, reflected in the ponds at either side.
Wat Sri Sawai 0.8 km
A ruined wat in old Sukhothai crowned by three tall prangs in the Khmer manner, enclosed by laterite walls. It is thought to have begun as a Hindu shrine before being turned to Buddhist use.
Wat Si Chum 1.3 km
A ruined wat just outside the walls of old Sukhothai, whose square mondop encloses a huge seated Buddha, Phra Achana, about 15 metres tall. A tall, narrow opening frames the image, so its face and gilded hand come slowly into view as you walk up.
Si Satchanalai Historical Park 46 km
The ruins of Si Satchanalai and the older town of Chaliang on a bend of the Yom river, traditionally said to have been founded in 1250 as the second centre of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Crown princes lived here in the 13th and 14th centuries, and its wats stand quieter and greener than Sukhothai's.
Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo 46 km
A ruined wat at Si Satchanalai named for its seven rows of chedis, dozens of them built in different styles. They are thought to have held the ashes of the town's ruling family, and some still keep stucco Buddhas in their niches.
Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park 63 km
The ruins of old Kamphaeng Phet on the Ping River, part of the same UNESCO listing as Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai. Large laterite wats stand in the forest inside and outside the old walls, while smaller brick sites lie at Nakhon Chum across the river.
Wat Phra That Lampang Luang 137 km
A walled Lanna wat about 15 kilometres from Lampang, built in the 15th century and one of the best kept of its age. Inside the old walls stand open timber halls and a tall gilded chedi, much as they would have looked five centuries ago.
