Near Kenyir Lake
Taman Negara 50 km
A vast rainforest set aside in 1938 across Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu, first called the King George V National Park. Boats run up the Tembeling River to Kuala Tahan, where trails lead into some of the oldest forest on earth.
Crystal Mosque 50 km
A mosque of steel, glass and crystal on the river island of Wan Man, opened in 2008 within the Islamic Heritage Park. It holds more than 1,500 worshippers and glows after dark when it is lit from within.
Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque 52 km
Known as the Floating Mosque, it stands in the Kuala Ibai lagoon near the river mouth, about 4 kilometres from Kuala Terengganu. Finished in 1995, it mixes modern and Moorish design in marble, ceramics and mosaic.
Kapas Island 57 km
A small island off Marang, roughly 1.5 by 2.5 kilometres, with little Gemia Island just to its north. Its name means cotton, after the white beaches, and jungle runs down to coral reefs in clear water.
Lang Tengah Island 88 km
A small island off the Terengganu coast between Redang and the Perhentians, reached by ferry from Merang. It has only a handful of resorts, so its beaches and reefs stay quiet.
Redang Island 89 km
One of the largest islands off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, and the main one of nine islands in a marine park. The water around it is clear and full of coral, which is what brings the divers and snorkellers.
Perhentian Islands 102 km
Two main islands, Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, off the coast of Besut in Terengganu. There are no roads, so boats link the beaches, and the clear water and reefs make them a favourite for snorkelling and diving.
Cherating 117 km
A laid-back beach village on the South China Sea, 47 km north of Kuantan. Its sheltered bay is a favourite for learning to surf in the monsoon months, and Asia's first Club Med opened along the shore here.
