Sri Mahamariamman Temple 0.2 km
The oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur, founded in 1873 on the edge of Chinatown. Its present building dates from 1968, with a raja gopuram crowded with brightly painted deities in the South Indian style.
Central Market 0.3 km
A pale blue Art Deco hall at the edge of Chinatown that began life as a wet market and now sells crafts, batik, songket and souvenirs. Its covered lane outside, Kasturi Walk, is lined with stalls and snacks.
Merdeka 118 0.5 km
At 678.9 metres, the second tallest building in the world, its faceted glass spire visible from across Kuala Lumpur. Completed in 2023 in the old Merdeka precinct, it still has most of its floors closed, though a hotel now occupies the upper levels.
Masjid Jamek 0.5 km
One of the oldest mosques in the city, standing on the spit where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet, the spot where Kuala Lumpur began. Designed by Arthur Benison Hubback and built in 1909, its domes and striped arches were the city's main place of prayer until 1965.
Sultan Abdul Samad Building 0.6 km
A late 19th century block of red brick, arches and copper domes, with a clock tower facing Merdeka Square. It was built for the British colonial administration and known simply as Government Offices until 1974, when it took the name of the sultan of Selangor in whose reign it was begun.
Merdeka Square 0.7 km
A broad lawn, once the cricket green of the Selangor Club, facing the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. At midnight on 31 August 1957 the Union Flag was lowered here and the Malayan flag raised for the first time, and the Independence Day parade still marches past each year.
National Mosque of Malaysia 0.7 km
Completed in 1965 for a newly independent country, in bold modern concrete. Its 16-pointed star roof folds like an open umbrella and the 73 metre minaret is capped like a closed one, surrounded by pools and fountains and room for 15,000 worshippers.
Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia 1.0 km
The largest museum of Islamic art in Southeast Asia, opened in 1998 near the National Mosque. More than seven thousand objects from across the Islamic world fill its galleries, under a set of tiled domes.
