Near Porto Venere
Riomaggiore 9.4 km
The southernmost of the Cinque Terre villages, built up the sides of a narrow valley that runs down to a tiny harbour. Tall painted houses line its steep main street, and fishing boats are pulled up on the slipway between them.
Via dell'Amore 9.8 km
A cliffside footpath of just over a kilometre linking Riomaggiore and Manarola, high above the sea. It is one section of the Sentiero Azzurro, the Blue Path, and is known for the padlocks couples have left along its railings.
Manarola 11 km
The second smallest of the Cinque Terre villages, home to a few hundred people, its pastel houses stacked on a rock above the sea. Vineyards climb the slopes behind, and the view back to the village from the headland path at dusk is the picture most people carry home.
Corniglia 13 km
The one Cinque Terre village that does not touch the sea, set on a promontory about 100 metres high with vineyards and terraces on three sides. From the station below it is reached by the Lardarina, a brick stairway of 33 flights and 383 steps.
Cinque Terre 13 km
Five villages clinging to the cliffs of the Ligurian coast: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The coast, the villages and the terraced hillsides form a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, linked by footpaths and a railway.
Vernazza 15 km
A car-free fishing village with tall painted houses crowded around the only natural harbour of the Cinque Terre. It is the fourth of the five villages heading north, and the tower of its old castle looks down over the little port.
Monterosso al Mare 18 km
The largest and most northerly of the Cinque Terre villages, and the one with the longest sandy beach. An old town of narrow lanes sits on one side of a headland and a newer quarter, Fegina, on the other.
Portofino 57 km
A small harbour town on the Italian Riviera, its colourfully painted houses lining the waterfront. European aristocrats began holidaying here in the late 19th century, and yachts now crowd the little bay below the wooded headland.
