Pompeii
A Roman city buried under ash and pumice by Vesuvius in 79 AD and slowly uncovered since the 18th century. Its streets, houses, bakeries, baths and painted walls show ordinary Roman life more fully than almost anywhere else.

Near Pompeii
Villa of the Mysteries 1.1 km
A Roman villa on the edge of Pompeii, known for the frescoes of one room painted in the 1st century BC. The figures, on a deep red ground, are usually read as a bride's initiation into a mystery cult, and are among the finest Roman paintings to survive.
Mount Vesuvius 9.5 km
A volcano on the Gulf of Naples, about 9 kilometres east of the city, its cone partly ringed by the rim of an older and much higher mountain. A path climbs to the edge of the crater, with the whole bay spread out below.
Herculaneum 13 km
A Roman seaside town in modern Ercolano, buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD under deep volcanic deposits. Because of that, wooden beams, furniture and upper floors survived here that were lost at Pompeii, so the site is smaller but often better preserved.
Positano 14 km
A town on the Amalfi Coast whose houses, painted in pinks and yellows, tumble down a steep hillside to a small beach. Steps and lanes take the place of streets in much of it, and boats leave from the shore for Amalfi and Capri.
Villa Rufolo 15 km
A villa in the historic centre of Ravello, laid out in the 13th century and remodelled in the 19th, facing the cathedral square. Its terraced gardens hang high above the Amalfi Coast, and Richard Wagner drew on them for a scene in Parsifal.
Amalfi Coast 16 km
A stretch of steep coast on the Gulf of Salerno, south of the Sorrento Peninsula, where towns such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello cling to the cliffs. A narrow road winds above the sea between them, past lemon terraces and small beaches.
Amalfi Cathedral 16 km
A medieval cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo, dedicated to the Apostle Andrew, whose relics lie in its crypt. A long flight of steps climbs to its striped, arched front, and the Cloister of Paradise sits beside it.
Castel dell'Ovo 22 km
A seafront castle on the old island of Megaride, now joined to the shore, on the Gulf of Naples. Its name, the Egg Castle, comes from a medieval legend that the poet Virgil set a magic egg in its foundations, and that the city's luck rests on it staying whole.
