Near Kraton Yogyakarta
Taman Sari 0.7 km
The site of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta's royal garden, built in the mid-18th century within the grounds of the Kraton. It served as a place of rest, work, meditation and defence, and its bathing pools and underground passages still survive.
Malioboro Street 1.4 km
Yogyakarta's main shopping street, running north to south on the line between the Kraton and Mount Merapi. Its pavements fill with batik stalls, street food and becak riders, and the name covers the whole neighbourhood around it.
Ratu Boko 14 km
The remains of a hilltop compound on a plateau about 3 kilometres south of Prambanan, with a great stone gateway, terraces and bathing pools. Its original name is unknown, and locals named it after the legendary King Boko of the Roro Jonggrang tale.
Prambanan 15 km
A 9th-century Hindu temple compound dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer. Its tall, pointed central shrine to Shiva rises 47 metres, and its walls are carved with the story of the Ramayana.
Sewu Temple 16 km
An 8th-century Buddhist complex 800 metres north of Prambanan, older than Borobudur and the second largest of its kind in Indonesia. Its name means 'a thousand temples', from local folklore, though the complex has 249.
Plaosan Temple 17 km
A Buddhist temple complex about a kilometre north-east of Prambanan, in Bugisan village, Klaten. Its twin main shrines are surrounded by rows of small stupas and lesser shrines, and the stone carving is unusually fine.
Parangtritis Beach 24 km
A wide beach of dark sand on Java's south coast, about 30 kilometres south of Yogyakarta in Bantul. Its strong waves rule out swimming, but people come for the sunset, the dunes nearby and the legends of the sea goddess Nyi Roro Kidul.
Mendut Temple 27 km
A 9th-century Buddhist temple about 3 kilometres east of Borobudur, standing in a straight line with Pawon and Borobudur itself. Inside sit three large stone figures: a seated Buddha flanked by two bodhisattvas.
