Near Penataran Temple
Trowulan 55 km
An archaeological site of about 100 square kilometres thought to be the capital of the Majapahit Empire, described in the 14th-century poem Nagarakretagama. Among its red brick remains are the split gate of Wringin Lawang, the Bajang Ratu gate and a sunken royal bathing pool.
Mount Semeru 78 km
The highest mountain on Java, an active volcano 3,676 metres tall at the southern end of the Bromo Tengger Semeru park. Climbers walk in past the lake of Ranu Kumbolo, and the summit often puffs out small clouds of ash.
Mount Bromo 82 km
An active volcano rising from a vast plain of grey volcanic sand in the Tengger caldera, at 2,329 metres not the highest peak of the massif but the most famous. Its name comes from Brahma, and the Tengger people still climb to its smoking crater to make offerings.
Heroes Monument 104 km
A white obelisk shaped like an upturned nail, the main symbol of Surabaya, raised to those who died in the Battle of Surabaya on 10 November 1945. Beneath it, the 10 November Museum tells the story of that day.
House of Sampoerna 105 km
A tobacco museum in a Dutch colonial compound of 1862 in old Surabaya, once an orphanage. Liem Seeng Tee, founder of Sampoerna, bought it in 1932 for his first big cigarette factory, and kretek are still rolled by hand on the floor below the gallery.
Candi Cetho 125 km
A 15th-century Javanese Hindu temple climbing the western slope of Mount Lawu in a series of terraces, close to the border of Central and East Java. It sits high above the tea gardens and is often wrapped in cloud, and it is still used for Hindu worship.
Candi Sukuh 126 km
A 15th-century Hindu temple on the western slope of Mount Lawu, built as a plain stepped pyramid unlike any other candi in Java. Its reliefs and statues, including three tortoises with flattened shells, deal frankly with birth, life before it and sexual education.
Pura Mangkunegaran 161 km
The palace of the Mangkunegara princes in the heart of Surakarta, now partly open as a museum. Its great open pendopo, a Javanese pavilion on wooden pillars, leads to rooms holding the family's collection of royal heirlooms, masks and dance costumes.
