The best known in France

  • Albi Cathedral

Albi · Occitanie · UNESCO heritage

A red brick cathedral begun in 1282, after the Albigensian Crusade, and built over two hundred years; from outside it looks like a fortress. Inside, walls painted in blues and golds and an ornate carved choir screen make a lavish contrast, and it is said to be the largest brick building in the world.

  • Amiens Cathedral

    Amiens · Hauts-de-France · UNESCO heritage

A Gothic cathedral on a ridge above the Somme, the largest in France by interior volume. Its west front is carved with hundreds of figures, and its nave rises more than 42 metres.

  • Arles Amphitheatre

    Arles · Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur · UNESCO heritage

A two tiered Roman amphitheatre in the heart of Arles, with towers added in the Middle Ages when it was turned into a fortress. Nearly two thousand years on, it still fills with crowds for bullfights and summer festivals.

  • Basilica of Saint-Sernin

Toulouse · Occitanie · UNESCO heritage

A great Romanesque basilica in Toulouse built over the tomb of Saint Saturnin, the city's first bishop. Its octagonal brick bell tower rises in tiers above a church famed for its Romanesque sculpture, long a stop on the pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela.

  • Bourges Cathedral

Bourges · Centre-Val de Loire · UNESCO heritage

A cathedral dedicated to Saint Stephen, built from 1195 to 1230 over an earlier Romanesque church. It has no transepts, so its vast double-aisled interior runs unbroken from end to end, lit by some of the finest medieval stained glass in France.

  • Calanques de Piana

Piana · Corsica · UNESCO heritage

Jagged red cliffs rising from the Gulf of Porto on the west coast of Corsica, between Ajaccio and Calvi. Wind and weather have carved the rock into strange shapes, the coast road from Piana winds through them, and they form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Canadian National Vimy Memorial

    Vimy · Hauts-de-France · UNESCO heritage

Canada's memorial to its soldiers of the First World War, on the ridge the Canadian Corps attacked in 1917. Twin white pylons rise above a 100 hectare preserved battlefield park, and its walls carry the names of Canadians killed in France who have no known grave.

  • Canal du Midi

Toulouse · Occitanie · UNESCO heritage

A 240 kilometre canal across southern France from Toulouse towards the Mediterranean, one of the great construction works of the 17th century. Shaded by plane trees, its locks and towpaths are now the domain of slow barges, walkers and cyclists.

  • Carnac Stones

Carnac · Brittany · UNESCO heritage

More than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones near the south coast of Brittany, the largest such collection in the world. Hewn from local granite by the pre-Celtic people of the region, they run in long rows across the fields, among dolmens and burial mounds.

  • Chartres Cathedral

Chartres · Centre-Val de Loire · UNESCO heritage

A Gothic cathedral about 80 kilometres southwest of Paris, mostly built between 1194 and 1220 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It keeps most of its original medieval stained glass, famous for its deep blue, and a labyrinth laid into the floor of the nave.

  • Chauvet Cave

    Vallon-Pont-d'Arc · Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes · UNESCO heritage

A cave in a limestone cliff above the old bed of the Ardèche, holding some of the best preserved figurative paintings in the world: lions, horses and rhinoceroses from the Upper Paleolithic. The cave itself is closed to protect it, and a full scale replica nearby shows the art.

  • Château de Chambord

Chambord · Centre-Val de Loire · UNESCO heritage

The largest château of the Loire Valley, commissioned by Francis I and built between 1519 and 1547. Its roofline bristles with towers and chimneys, and at its heart is a double spiral staircase often linked to Leonardo da Vinci.
