The best known in Egypt
-
Abu Mena
The remains of a town, monastery and pilgrimage centre of late antiquity, about 50 kilometres south-west of Alexandria, built around the tomb of Saint Menas. Few walls still stand, but the foundations of the great basilica are easy to trace.
-
Abu Simbel Temples
Two temples cut into the rock by Ramesses II, one for himself and one for his queen Nefertari, on the shore of Lake Nasser near Sudan. In the 1960s they were sliced into blocks and raised above the waters, and twice a year the sun still reaches the inner sanctuary.
-
Al-Azhar Mosque
Founded by the Fatimids in 970 with their new capital, the first mosque of the city that became known for its thousand minarets. It grew into one of the oldest centres of learning in the world, and its marble courtyard is ringed by minarets from many centuries.
-
Bab Zuweila
One of three surviving gates in the walls of medieval Cairo, built in 1092 by the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Jamali. The twin minarets on top were added in the 1410s for the neighbouring Mosque of al-Muayyad, and climbing them gives a view across the old city.
-
Dahshur
A royal necropolis in the desert south of Saqqara, where the pharaoh Sneferu worked out how to build a true pyramid. His Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid stand here, far quieter than Giza, alongside later pyramids of the Middle Kingdom.
-
Giza Pyramids
The plateau where the three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure stand beside the Sphinx, all built in the Fourth Dynasty around 2600 to 2500 BC. Around them lie temples, cemeteries and the remains of the village where the builders lived.
-
Great Pyramid of Giza
The tomb of the pharaoh Khufu, raised around 2600 BC over some 26 years. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still largely standing, the largest pyramid Egypt ever built.
-
Islamic Cairo
The old walled heart of the city, built up from the Muslim conquest in 641 to the 19th century, and the reason Cairo is called the City of a Thousand Minarets. Its lanes run past Fatimid gates, Mamluk mosques, madrasas and the great Citadel.
-
Karnak Temple
A vast complex of temples, pylons and chapels built over some two thousand years, from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemies, and centred on the god Amun. Its Great Hypostyle Hall is a forest of 134 giant columns carved from top to bottom.
-
Khan el-Khalili
The great bazaar of old Cairo, trading since Mamluk times and named for one of its caravanserais. Its alleys are full of workshops making lamps, brass, glass and jewellery, and old cafes such as El Fishawy serve mint tea late into the night.
-
Luxor Temple
A great temple on the east bank of the Nile in the middle of Luxor, built around 1400 BC and known in Egyptian as the southern sanctuary. A single obelisk stands at its gate, its twin now in Paris, and the columns glow when lit after dark.
-
Memphis
The ruins of the first capital of a united Egypt, now among palm groves around the village of Mit Rahina. An open-air museum here keeps a colossal fallen statue of Ramesses II and a large alabaster sphinx.
