The best known in Australia

  • Blue Mountains National Park

Katoomba · New South Wales · UNESCO heritage

A huge sandstone plateau west of Sydney, cut into deep valleys and cliffs and covered in eucalyptus forest. Despite the name these are not really mountains, and the blue comes from the haze given off by the gum trees.

  • Budj Bim

Macarthur · Victoria · UNESCO heritage

A dormant volcano near Macarthur in south-western Victoria, also known as Mount Eccles, with a crater lake at its heart. Its lava flows shaped the land where the Gunditjmara people built stone channels and traps to farm eels, now a World Heritage site.

  • Cascades Female Factory

Hobart · Tasmania · UNESCO heritage

A former workhouse for female convicts in South Hobart, in use from 1828 to 1856, in the penal colony then called Van Diemen's Land. Its stone walls and yards are now one of the 11 sites that make up the World Heritage listed Australian Convict Sites.

  • Cockatoo Island

Sydney · New South Wales · UNESCO heritage

The largest island in Sydney Harbour, where the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers meet, used first as a convict prison and then as a shipyard. Its sandstone cells and dockyard sheds are a World Heritage site, reached by ferry, and you can camp there overnight.

  • Daintree Rainforest

Daintree · Queensland · UNESCO heritage

Rainforest that runs from the Daintree River north to Cooktown and inland to the Great Dividing Range, about 105 kilometres by road north of Cairns. A cable ferry carries cars across the river into it, and the forest comes right down to the beaches of the coast.

  • Dorrigo National Park

Dorrigo · New South Wales · UNESCO heritage

Rainforest on the escarpment off the Waterfall Way, a few kilometres east of the town of Dorrigo. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage area, it has a skywalk over the treetops and tracks down to waterfalls.

  • Fremantle Prison

Fremantle · Western Australia · UNESCO heritage

A walled limestone prison built by convicts transported from Britain, now one of the World Heritage listed Australian Convict Sites. Tours lead through the cellblocks, gatehouse and warders' cottages, and down into tunnels dug beneath the site.

  • Great Barrier Reef

Cairns · Queensland · UNESCO heritage

The world's largest coral reef system, over 2,900 reefs and 900 islands stretching more than 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast. It is the biggest single structure made by living things, and boats leave from Cairns for snorkelling and diving on the outer reef.

  • Hyde Park Barracks

Sydney · New South Wales · UNESCO heritage

A brick compound on Macquarie Street built in 1817 to 1819 to house convict men and boys, designed by the convict architect Francis Greenway. It later served as an asylum and courts, and is now a museum of the convict era and part of a World Heritage listing.

  • K'gari

Hervey Bay · Queensland · UNESCO heritage

The largest sand island in the world, about 250 kilometres north of Brisbane and listed as a World Heritage site. Rainforest grows out of its sand, freshwater lakes such as Lake McKenzie sit in its dunes, and four-wheel drives use its long eastern beach as a road.

  • Kakadu National Park

Jabiru · Northern Territory · UNESCO heritage

A vast park 171 kilometres south-east of Darwin, listed as a World Heritage Site for both its wetlands and its Aboriginal rock art. Ubirr and Nourlangie hold paintings made over thousands of years, and the floodplains fill with birds and crocodiles.

  • Lamington National Park

Canungra · Queensland · UNESCO heritage

Rainforest on the McPherson Range along the Queensland and New South Wales border, about 85 kilometres from Southport. Known for its birdlife, ancient trees and waterfalls, it is reached at O'Reilly's and Binna Burra, where walking tracks start.
